Post about a Post about a Post (On Likelihoods and Deterministic Models)

I asked Andrew Gelman to comment on my post about Where Do Likelihoods Come From? He had some interesting links to papers that he’s written which are relevant, but there are also a lot of good comments over on his blog (he’s got a good critical mass of readers). In particular, Keith links to this presentation on doing statistics with computational models which seems to be motivated by biological/medical considerations but has a lot of good points about dynamic or mechanistic models in general.

This related paper explains things in quite a lot of detail: http://www.stat.lanl.gov/staff/DHigdon/Papers/siam03-2743.pdf

Note the Gaussian likelihood in equation 4.
